In his exploration of photography connected with the values of truth and memory, Joan Fontcuberta has spent time over recent years developing the Trauma project, a poetic conceptual journey that dives into historical photographic archives. Fontcuberta is interested in archival images in traumatic states: images that are sick due to deterioration caused by moisture, mold or microorganisms, images breathe the last breath of of what they represent, reduced to ghostly traces of faded memory. Once its link with reality is broken, the visual information is lost and its status as a document vanishes.
In 2019 Fontcuberta visited several Mexican archives and made more than a thousand shots from dilapidated glass negatives. In this beautiful, tragic and somber Mexican suite, glimmers of the country's history still appear: the Revolution, dramatic milestones, public figures, social and domestic lives... The set of these graphic registers range from portraits of Francisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata to executions to weddings, baptisms and identity photos, from folklore and traditions to landscapes and monumental heritage. It thus confronts us with a mosaic of situations and genres, from the family album to photojournalism, from scientific to pornographic photography, which accounts for the texture of social and historical narratives, but which, on the other hand, allows us to metaphorically extrapolate the ancestral Mictlán cosmology. Nine notebooks evoke the nine stages of the underworld that the deceased were to go through in order to pass each level's specific test, advancing until they reached eternal rest. In this journey, the body falls away until the soul is completely liberated, in a process that suggests the progressive dematerialization of the photograph itself.
"Mictlán is an experimental jewel crystallized in an original artist's book, printed in a signed edition and limited to 100 copies. It is presented in an amate case and the body consists of nine sheets, each containing a different type of Mexican paper: kraft, mantequilla, revolution, education, bond, estraza, mina gris, among others. The graphic design has been carried out by Ramon Pez, who has outdone himself in one of his most brilliant achievements". Joan Fontcuberta
In addition, the photobook includes the MICTLÁN A Photographic Hauntology essay written especially for the book by the author. Mictlán is a photobook published by INFRAMUNDO, a collaborative work between Joan Fontcuberta with Ramon Pez and Ana Casas Broda, with the valuable support of Ricardo García Caballero and the Hydra team.
